The musician FKA twigs is also an amazing pole dancer (her Instagram is very much worth following)

Gymnastics touched by the divine. How is this not an Olympic sport?

Thanks Mary.

well, officially, you can die happy many times over because your words have evoked more than just joy for me. that said, please don't do that yet, and thank you for this video! i've always been gobsmacked by pole dancers—the athleticism and artistry, it's so unbelievably HARD to do and so sexy to watch!

There were two amazing, beautiful pole dancers in the production of Handel's Theodora at the Royal Opera House last year. They almost stole the 2nd act.

Mare, do you feel, when you move to another text, a semblance of transmogrification. I've started to notice how differently the tones are of each season are and how they influence the novel-writing-writer. Do you feel achievement once you're on the other side of the book or do you feel nothing after? I was heartbroken to hear about Charlie Kaufman, the whatever he is now, that of all his work, he feels nothing gratifying about it. It seems to make him more sad. Do you get that sense?

On the other side of the book? I've felt both, but usually its been a kind of near-ecstatic feeling of pleasure, something better than a sense of achievement. Only once was a weird kind of nothingness, just a relief that it was over and not being sure what I thought of it. Actually I'm never sure what I think of them at the end, but usually it doesn't matter, I"m done thinking about it. About the seasons, I haven't noticed a particular influence. About Kaufman, yeah, that is sad. I can picture feeling that way and it would be awful. What do you mean re: transmorg?

My sister took up pole dancing just after she turned 40, she was a hip hop dancer previously whose knees eventually gave out. It's just amazing seeing what she and other pole dancers can do.

I expected my father (understandably) to be more skeptical, but now he points his friends to my sister's Instagram account when she posts various videos of her pole workouts, he's just as entranced.

She's so into it that she had a pole setup at my parents' house so that she can workout when she comes to visit. It was fascinating when we had a small party and my sister encouraged people to try the pole -- many were shy but eventually couldn't resist seeing what it took to try to swing your body around, both men and women, it was really cool actually. (I was hopeless at it because my upper body strength is nil, but some people had a lot of fun with it, especially those who were smaller)

I know, its astounding, the over-all body strength and grace. Relates to some of my other posts about the power of bodily connection; you'd have to be very very in your body and responsive to it to do this well.

This is why I'm on your case about DeLillo's BODY ARTIST. It's about precisely, this.

I'm not sure any writer can accomplish the same feats as a pole dancer, but your book "The Mare" remains one of my all-time favorite novels. I still recommend it to friends.
