Music by Steve King and the Echelons, 1962. Action by Tura Satana, Lori Williams and Haji in Russ Meyer’s Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, 1965. All great, but Tura S. is the most important part here. In case you don’t know who she is:
When I was young I was not a fan of Russ Meyers, thought his movies were boring, crass fantasies about women with monster tits. (They also probably made me feel anxious about the size of my own non-monsters, plus my lack of ability to drag race etc.) I still kind of feel that way. But the power and brio with which Satana projects herself into this one-dimensional fantasy makes it explode into something…too awesome for words.
Steve King is a more mysterious figure: he was and perhaps still is a Chicago DJ who recorded three 45s in the 60s.
His recording career doesn’t even show up on his Wiki page. But that guitar lick…TAFW.
Love this. I followed the Steve King link, which led me to the Holly Golightly cover, which is also great -- real Nick Cave’s Red Right Hand energy to it...
Faster pussycat kill kill. Excellent choice, in homage this film poster was recreated in the book “Submitted: letters to a dominatrix” by lookalike Mistress Xena, expounding the virtues of the strong woman in control. http://www.probeco.net/submitted
, if it’s possible to have a Tura Satana Lookalike! When her partner leans forward to light her cigarillo for her, Tura comes up with the great line: “Easy baby, you’re a fire hazard!” There is also a great version of “Faster Pussycat kill kill” song by the rockabilly band The Cramps… Check it out.
